  • The Basque Country was the third position in per capita GDP of Spain’s regions, making it one of the richest. However, due to the conflict, the Basque Country has now dropped to the 6th GDP.

  • It is believed that the Basque people have been living in the same region for approximately 4 thousand years.

  • The green St. Andrew’s cross on the Basque flag is thought to represent the Oak of Guernica. The white cross is meant to symbolize Catholicism. The red background represents the Basque people. Due to the colors symbolic meanings, the flag colors are also the national colors.

  • When the bombing of Guernica occured Francisco Franco was allied with the Nazi Germany, who at the time was led by Hitler. Hitler had used the bombing of Guernica as a way to test new war materials and tactics.
